French Press

What you'll need
-
French PressAny size works — just keep your coffee-to-water ratio the same.
-
ScaleSet to grams. Simple and repeatable every time.
-
40g of coffeeGround coarse — like rough sea salt. Finer grounds will slip through the press filter.
-
Hot waterFresh off the boil — around 205°F / 96°C
-
TimerSet it for 4 minutes and let it do the work.
Step by step
-
Set up and add your coffee
Place your French Press on the scale and add your 40g of coarsely ground coffee.
-
Zero out and pour
Zero out your scale. Start your timer counting down from four minutes and begin pouring your hot water. Pour up to 664g.
Pour slowly and evenly to make sure all the grounds get saturated.
-
Press and pour
Once your timer goes off, give it a light stir and remove the foam from the top of your brew. Place the press filter on top and press it down slowly and steadily.
Don't press too hard or too fast — a slow, controlled press keeps the grounds at the bottom and gives you a cleaner cup.
-
Enjoy it!
Pour yourself some really awesome coffee. Seriously — you earned it.
Tips to level up
Grind coarse
This is the most important variable in a French Press. Too fine and the grounds slip through the filter and make your cup muddy and bitter. Coarse is the move.
Don't let it sit
Once you've pressed, pour your coffee right away. Leaving it in the French Press means the grounds keep extracting and it'll turn bitter fast.
Skim the foam
That foam on top is CO₂ and fine particles. Skimming it before pressing gives you a noticeably cleaner, smoother cup.
Embrace the body
French Press coffee is naturally fuller and richer than filtered methods — that's the point. The oils that stay in the cup add flavor and texture you just can't get from paper filters.
